Peshawar Teachers Shut Down Primary Schools After Clashes With Peshawar Police

After the Peshawar Police baton-charged and teargas shelled a primary school teachers’ protest in Peshawar, the All Primary Teachers Association (APTA) decided to close primary schools starting tomorrow. The police action was taken against the teachers after negotiations between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government (KP) and the teachers failed.

Following failed negotiations, the police used aerial firing, baton charges, tear gas shelling, and baton charges to disperse protestors gathered outside the KP Assembly. As a result, peaceful protestors threw stones at the police. The incident resulted in the injury of two teachers and two policemen, who were transported to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar for treatment.

According to Aziz Ullah, the Provincial President of APTA, the protestors will not return to the protest site until their demands have been met, as well as answers from the police officers who committed acts of brutality against them. The school teachers demanded a number of things during the strike, including promotion and an increase in allowances.

The Peshawar Police has also detained over 150 teachers, warning protestors not to gather at GT Road. Teachers at the Government Higher Secondary School in City No. 1 were arrested during a raid. 213 protesting schoolteachers have also been charged in an FIR with interfering with government affairs, vandalizing public property, and throwing stones at police officers.
